Gombe Stream NP is well known for the chimp research done by Jane Goodall. The 120 or so chimps there have been studied by volunteers and researchers since 1960. The Park lies just 16km north of the largest village on the Lake, KIGOMA. Just to the south of Kigoma is the infamous slave centre of Ujiji. This is where Henry Stanley found David Livingstone and uttered the words: “Dr Livingstone I presume”.
There are more than 700 chimps in Mahale Mountains NP. This beautiful park is much larger than Gombe Stream (1,613 sq km vs 52 sq km). It is also more remote than Gombe and therefore more difficult to get to. But the journey is well worth it and a trip to these untouched, forested areas is an experience that you will never forget!
